What is an SSL certificate?
An SSL certificate is a file added to a server and used to prove its identity on the web. It enables the https protocol, which encrypts the whole conversation between two computers so that no other computer on the internet can “read” it.
When you visit a site using the https protocol instead of http, your computer talks to the origin server, whose identity is validated through a public key (shared on the network) and a private key (kept secret on the server).
What is SSL?
SSL, or TLS, is a protocol that encrypts data sent over the internet and verifies and validates the identity of servers. Sites that load with https in the address bar use this protocol.
Why does my site need an SSL certificate?
An SSL certificate adds a layer of security and privacy for your site and for everyone who visits and interacts with it. It prevents phishing and impersonation attacks that collect data from thousands of unsuspecting users. Some other benefits include:
A faster site
Even if it seems counterintuitive, increasing a site’s protection doesn’t slow it down. Quite the opposite: an HTTPS connection uses the HTTP/2 protocol, which is faster.
Google favors sites with SSL certificates
In July 2017, Google stated publicly that sites without an SSL certificate would be penalized in its search engine. This means secure sites rank better in searches and get more visits.
How do I get an SSL certificate?
Any server can self-sign its own certificate, but this isn’t recommended, even though it’s widely done. The right way is to get the certificate from a Certificate Authority (CA). A CA is an independent, trusted company that can generate and digitally sign certificates and sell them. There are several levels of certification, but in general you need to prove you own the domain for the certificate to be issued.

Can I get a certificate for free?
Yes. Initiatives such as Let’s Encrypt let you issue and set up your own SSL certificate, using Certbot. However, it takes technical knowledge to do so.
